We therefore judge the prospect of nuclear action as “possible”. While there is no reasonable fear of further escalation, Russia is not behaving reasonably. This is why Russia is taking such postures. Additionally, Russia fears the possibility of invasion, and this fear is leading to paranoia. Russia feels the West is weak and will capitulate if enough force is used. It is not entirely impossible that he will react outside the realm of reasonableness. Russia’s president Putin has displayed an unusual aggressiveness as of late. Russia has raised the alert level of its nuclear forces, citing aggressive statements by NATO and the imposed sanctions as the reason for the higher posture. There are currently no imminent nuclear threats at this time, however the situation is considered fluid and can change rapidly.
